Project PENCIL Parents’ Guide
Project PENCIL provides information, tips, and strategies to help parents of children with chronic illnesses. The Project PENCIL Parents’ Guide contains eight concrete steps to help support children with chronic illnesses. The Guide include extensive information about educational accommodations, federal regulations, contingency plans, and more. The Guide uses case studies, handouts, checklists, and infographics to help parents apply the information to practically support their children with chronic illnesses.
Chapter One: Introduction to the Parents’ Guide. Chapter One describes the content and purpose of this Guide and suggests the best methods for using it.
Chapter Two: Steps to Success. Chapter Two guides you through the eight steps that you should take to successfully manage your child’s chronic illness and education.
Chapter Three: Educational Accommodations. Chapter Three provides an extensive list of educational accommodations for children with chronic illnesses. You can choose those most relevant to your child’s particular situation and recommend them to the school.
Chapter Four: Laws Protecting Your Child’s Right to Education. Chapter Four provides an overview of the federal regulations that protect access to education for children with chronic illnesses.
Chapter Five: Contingency Plans. Chapter Five discusses what to do and where to go for help if you experience challenges managing your child’s chronic illness and education.
Chapter Six: Additional Resources. Chapter Six provides more information on topics beyond the scope of this Guide and recommendations for further reading.
